One Theme - Seven Tries

In school I used to draw a lot. But after leaving school it got less. And less. And one day I stopped what used to be one of my favorite hobbies.

Now I decided to start again. And to improve my skills. So the idea of this blog is that I pick an interesting theme (a person, a special kind of landscape, an object...) and draw/ paint seven pictures of it, hoping to get a better understanding of the motive during the process.
By publishing it this way, I hope to motivate myself and get feedback that helps me to see and improve things in my paintings I otherwise might overlook.
... so feel free to leave comments!

Seven tries ... Nihad Djedovic (ALBA Berlin)

Drawing the first picture of this series I had to admit that there's no real resemblance between the original and my drawing, which led me to the idea of this blog.
You'll notice that most of the pictures are not complete. This is due to my first concept "7 pictures in 7 days". But nights were getting to short, so I had to skip the 7 days idea...
By the way: I draw my pictures the old fashioned way: pencil on paper (as they did in the time when at least some parts of everyday life worked without computers or smartphones - the time I call youth ;) ... so I have to scan them, which means the pictures and the expressions you see here look slightly different from the real ones. I try to adjust that by using some of GIMP's sliders. But still the result isn't entirely what I want. Either the dark parts get to accented or the lighter strokes stay invisible. It seems to me as if the light of the scanner reflects to much on the graphite. Maybe I should start using black colored pencils.
So, if you got some ideas how to get a better scan result, please leave a comment. Or if you got experience with photographing drawings.

Nihad Djedovic - Second Try
This drawing has a shaded background in original. But after scanning and adjusting, it looked as if he was on fire ... which actually goes quite well with the slightly demonic look (maybe I should add some horns) ... but before anyone starts to analyze what I want to tell the world with this picture, I decided  to just remove the background.

Nihad Djedovic - Fourth Try
Getting closer!!! But again, the nose is all wrong. That's my biggest problem with these pictures: the solution of the images I find online is not high enough for enlargement, so I can't get a closer look. Therefore I have to guess some details... and I'm not good at guessing. If I was a quicker painter I would do live sketches while watching their games.

Nihad Djedovic - Fifth Try

Ok, I admit, I don't like drawing jerseys. I never had difficulties with drapery, but this fabric? Awful! I suggest that in the seasons to come, the players wear no shirts at all!!! After all, the cheerleaders' clothes are getting shorter, so that would only be fair. And I could expand my muscle studies...

Nihad Djedovic - Sixth Try
 Only one more to go...

Nihad Djedovic - Seventh Try
It's done! I finished the last picture of this series! And I think it really does look like him. Well, at least for someone who is not as familiar with him and his looks as a friend or relative might be... ok, he himself might protest too...Anyway, I can see a certain progress in my work! So let's see... who's next???
